Maori Trustee Training

The Maori Trustee Training (MTT) programme is aimed at improving the governance capability of trustees managing Maori assets under multiple ownership.

The fully funded programme is delivered by specialist training providers throughout New Zealand and includes one-on-one assessments, group training workshops and follow-up coaching.

Who Is Eligible?

  • Trustees and managers of Maori trusts and incorporations of land managed under Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993
  • Trustees of Maori trusts and similar organisations managing Maori assets under multiple ownership
  • Anyone seeking election as a trustee of one of the above.

What Is Involved?

Needs Assessment
You will begin the Maori Trustee Training programme with a one-on-one assessment to identify what specific areas of governance assistance you require. This enables training workshops to be tailored specifically to your needs.

Training Workshops
Training workshops can be designed for individual trustees or groups of trustees from a particular trust, Whanau, Hapu or Iwi.

The topics will be based around the following eight modules:

    • Rights and Obligations of Trustees
    • Essential Statutes
    • Trustee's legal obligations and liabilities
  2. Long term strategy and planning
    • What is a strategic plan?
    • Benefits of a strategic plan

    • Financial management
    • Business plans
  4. Management performance evaluation
    • Governing operations
    • Performance plans
    • Recruitment
    • Performance evaluation
  5. Risk and risk management

    • Trustees' role in risk management
  6. Quality control systems
    • Types of quality control
    • Trustee involvement
  7. Self-monitoring and review
    • Role of board

Follow-up Coaching
After attending a group training session coaches are available to help you implement the skills, ideas and knowledge gained in the training workshop.

What does the training cost?
Maori Trustee Training is fully funded by New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE) under its Enterprise Training Programme so there is no cost to you, however you will need to invest your time, effort and commitment.
